Who Is This For?
The Musser Automation Remote Robot Lab is designed for engineers, students, and developers who need hands-on access to a real ABB industrial robot—without the cost or space required to host one. Whether you're learning, prototyping, or validating your code, this lab gives you full remote control from anywhere.
-
Robotics Students & Educators – Gain access to real hardware for lessons, labs, and hands-on training.
-
Automation Engineers – Prototype motion sequences and test logic before going onsite.
-
Software Developers – Validate motion-planning, vision, and robotics algorithms using physical hardware.
-
AI/ML Researchers – Collect real-world sensor data and test embodied AI behavior.
-
Robotics Startups – Test product ideas or automate proof-of-concept demos without upfront capital.
What You Can Do in the Remote Robot Lab
The Remote Robot Lab gives you full access to an ABB IRB1300 inside a controlled cell. You can interact with the robot in real time, upload and run code, and experiment with advanced motion and perception pipelines. Everything is streamed to your browser.
-
Upload and run RAPID programs
-
Jog the robot through a browser-based interface
-
Stream Cartesian TCP targets (EGM-style)
-
Access live RGB and depth camera feeds
-
Capture point clouds for computer vision and ML
-
Validate pick-and-place strategies and custom trajectories
-
Prototype and test automation concepts in hours - not weeks

How It works
Once early access opens, you'll be able to reserve robot time, log in through a secure browser link, and interact with the robot through an intuitive interface. Whether you're exploring basic movement or streaming high-frequency trajectories, the system is designed to be simple, safe, and powerful.
1
Reserve a time slot in the calendar
2
Receive a secure link to the live robot interface
3
Control the IRB1300 via code upload, jogging, or streaming
4
Monitor live camera feeds and data streams
5
Download logs and datasets from your session
Choose Your Training Approach
Every user has different goals and learning styles. The Musser Automation Remote Robot Lab supports two distinct training modes — from open-ended exploration to structured, assignment-based learning. Whether you're a student, engineer, or researcher, you can choose the path that best fits your objectives.
Self-Guided Exploration
This mode gives you full access to the robot so you can explore at your own pace. Experiment with RAPID, Python-based commands, jogging, trajectory streaming, and computer vision workflows. This path is ideal for learners who prefer hands-on discovery and want the freedom to test ideas without predefined constraints.
Guided Assignments & Curriculum
For users who want structured learning, the lab offers a growing library of assignments designed to build practical robot-programming skills. Each assignment involves a real, physical task performed in the robot cell — not a simulation. This mode is perfect for students, classrooms, and anyone new to industrial robotics.
About the Robot
The Musser Automation Remote Robot Lab is powered by an ABB IRB1300-7/1.4, a compact and highly capable industrial manipulator designed for fast, precise motion in demanding environments. This robot is widely used in manufacturing, R&D, and advanced robotics education—providing real-world performance far beyond hobby-level equipment.
With high-speed axes, excellent repeatability, and an ABB OmniCore controller, the IRB1300 gives you the same platform trusted by professional automation teams around the world.

End-of-Arm Tooling (Gripper)
The robot is equipped with an industrial-grade, electrically actuated parallel gripper capable of handling a wide variety of objects commonly used in robotics R&D. The gripper supports:
-
Fully electric control (no pneumatics required)
-
Programmable open/close directly through RAPID or streamed control
-
Adaptive gripping for rectangular, cylindrical, and irregular objects
-
Replaceable fingertips for custom experiments
-
Reliable force and position control for both gentle and firm gripping operations
This ensures users can test complete manipulation sequences—including grasping, lifting, placing, stacking, and handing off objects—entirely through the remote interface.
How we Ensure Safety
The Remote Robot Lab is built around a fully enclosed ABB robot cell with industrial-grade safety hardware. All remote sessions run inside a secure environment designed to protect both users and equipment.
-
Fully Enclosed Cell — The robot operates inside a locked, rigid enclosure during all remote activity.
-
Industrial E-Stops & Interlocks — Hardwired safety relays and emergency stops follow standard machine-safety practices.
-
Command Validation — Remote motion commands are checked before execution to prevent unsafe paths or out-of-range targets.
-
Speed & Workspace Limits — Software limits keep motion within a safe, controlled portion of the robot’s reach.
-
Session Monitoring — Live oversight and activity logs ensure safe, traceable operation.
These layers of physical and software protection create a safe environment where you can explore, experiment, and learn — even at a distance.
